Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! Happy New Year 2024!

I was asked  “What does Web-Scale Mean?” at the end of my last post.

If you missed part 1, check link below:
Part 1 – NPP Training series – Nutanix Terminology

Nutanix Terminology

Well, Web-scale is more than just a buzzword, it’s the way datacenters and software architectures are designed to incorporate multi-dimensional concepts such as scalability, consistency, tolerance, versioning etc. As we move through the understanding of Hyperconvergence, the meaning of web-scale becomes clear.

As a solutions architect, I personally feel Web-Scale is a methodology to live by.
Now let’s finish out terminology. There are 4 more terms to get familiar with.
SCV Nutanix Terminology

Storage Pool: A storage pool is a group of physical storage devices (SSD or HDD) for the cluster. The pool can span multiple Nutanix nodes and is expanded as the cluster scales.

Container: A container is a logical segmentation of the storage pool and contains a group of VM or files(Vdisks). This allows admins to apply policies like compression and deduplication at a container level and applied at the VMFile level. Containers are mapped by SMB 3.0 share in Hyper-V.

Datastore: A logical container for files necessary for VM operations. Nutanix support the SMB 3.0 protocol in Hyper-V.

vDisk: A vDisk is a subset of available storage within a container that provides storage to virtual machines. In Hyper-V, this would be the VHDVHDX files.

Now that we have finished with basic terminology, next up Cluster Architecture. This is where the fun part starts.

A special thanks to @StevenPoitras as I love his “The Nutanix Bible Blog”..
and yes, stole some of his screenshots……

and even though he is a Sea Hawks Fan…He’s is a great guy.  😉

Until next time, Rob…

  1. My Seahawks will have their glory again next year! 🙂
I guess one good analogy for compress would be what the Patriots do with their footballs ;P

  2. Excellent post. I was checking continuously this weblog and
I am impressed! Very useful info specifically the final phase 🙂 I take care
of such information much. I used to be looking for this
particular info for a very lengthy time. Thanks and best of
    luck.
